Course Work/Semester Exchange

Foreign nationals registered for a degree in a recognized Institute/University who are officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Course work at NITC for a period not exceeding two semesters (1 year) can be accepted as exchange students under the MoU or non-MOU category.

The admission of foreign nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to, between NITC and the partner University/Institution concerned. Students are required to bear costs related to living expenses, boarding, lodging and travel. Accommodation is provided in hostels on payment basis (approx. Rs.40,000/- per semester). Students arriving under the MoU will not be charged tuition fees.

For the admission of foreign nationals under the non-MOU category, students are requested to pay the corresponding tuition fee per semester as per the rules and regulations of NITC.

  • The student must be registered for a UG/PG program in a recognized foreign Institute/University.
  • The student should be nominated/recommended by the recognized university for the course work, for both the MOU and non-MOU category.
  • Students are expected to have a good knowledge of English.

  • Students are requested to fill in the Application form and email the necessary documents.

  • What type of visa should I apply for?
    - All students opting for coursework should apply for only STUDENT visa.
  • Can I do my course work exchange in my first year of UG/PG?
    - Foreign students (UG) who want to apply for course work exchange are expected to have completed at least 3-4 semesters at their home institution. PG students are expected to have completed at least one semester at their home institution.
  • Can I take courses across different departments?
    - Yes, students can register for courses from other departments as well.
  • Is there a minimum attendance requirement for exchange students?
    - Yes, students are requested to have a minimum of 80% attendance.

Research Work/Thesis

Foreign nationals registered for a Master’s/PhD degree in a recognized Institute/University who are officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Research work or to avail of a laboratory or other facilities at NITC for a period not exceeding two semesters can be accepted as visiting students under the MoU or non-MOU category.

The admission of foreign nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between NITC and the partner University/Institution concerned. Students are required to bear costs related to living expenses, boarding, lodging and travel. Accommodation is provided in hostels on payment basis (approx. Rs.40,000/- per semester). Students arriving under the MoU will not be charged tuition fees if they are doing course work.

For the admission of foreign nationals under the non-MOU category, students are requested to pay the corresponding tuition fee per semester if they are doing course work as per the rules and regulations of NITC.

  • The student must be registered under a Master’s/PhD program in a recognized foreign Institute/University.
  • The student should be nominated/recommended by the recognized university for the Research work, for both the MOU and non-MOU category.
  • The student is requested to identify a faculty advisor they are interested to work with in NITC. They should approach the concerned NITC faculty for acceptance to be their supervisor at NITC throughout their research work with the recommendation from their advisor/guide at the home institution.

Research Internship

Foreign nationals registered for a UG/PG/PhD degree in a recognized Institute/University who are officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Internship or to avail of a laboratory or other facilities at NITC for a period not exceeding two semesters can be accepted as visiting students under the MoU or non-MOU category.

The admission of foreign nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between NITC and the partner University/Institution concerned. Students are required to bear costs related to living expenses, boarding, lodging and travel. Accommodation is provided in hostels on payment basis (approx. Rs.27,000/- per semester). Students arriving under the MoU will not be charged tuition fees.

For the admission of foreign nationals under the non-MOU category, the students are requested to pay the corresponding tuition fee per semester as per the rules and regulations of NITC.

  • The student must be registered under a UG/PG/PhD program in a recognized foreign Institute/University.
  • The student should be nominated/recommended by the recognized university for the Internship, for both the MOU and non-MOU category.
  • The student is requested to identify a faculty advisor they are interested to work within NITC. They should approach the concerned NITC faculty for acceptance to be their supervisor at NITC throughout their internship with the recommendation from their advisor/guide at the home institute.
  • Students are expected to have a good knowledge of English.

Combined Study and Practice Stays for Engineers from Developing Countries (KOSPIE) with Indian IITs

Overview Objective: The scholarships offer students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) the opportunity to complete project work as part of their master’s thesis under the guidance of a German professor at one of the TU9 technical universities.

Who can apply? Students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in the 2nd semester of their 2 year Master’s programme or 4th Semester of their 3-year master’s programme or the 8th semester of an integrated/dual degree programme.

Semester Exchange Program

A student exchange program is a study program in which students pursue education at one of the international partner institutions for a period of 6 months to 1 year.

NIT Calicut encourages all types of collaborations and exchange programs with foreign universities. Study abroad programs are typically intended for undergraduates & graduate students who would like to spend a semester abroad taking courses/project work. International exchanges propel students towards multi-faceted approaches to learning. These experiences play an important role in their self-development and awareness leading to enhanced self-confidence, self-esteem and exposure to ‘foreign’ environments.

  • The student must select a University based on information available on the Office of International Relations website (https://ir.NITC.ac.in). Institutions with whom NIT Calicut has a current MOU typically offer a tuition fee waiver.
  • The student will then have to identify a set of courses to be taken during the semester abroad, check the suitability of semester duration as well as the language of instruction.
  • He / She must then consult with the Faculty Advisor regarding the suitability of the proposed courses. The approval of the Faculty Advisor is an essential step of the process.
  • The student must obtain the approval of the Head of the Department.
  • The student must then obtain the necessary clearances from the Academic section and Dean, Academic Courses approval before submitting the request to the Office of International Relations.
  • The Student carrying backlogs will not be allowed to participate in “study-abroad” programs.
  • The student can submit his application form and other necessary documents to the Office of International Relations (OIR).
  • The OIR will then nominate the applicant to the relevant Office at the foreign university and facilitate the process of admission.
  • Students have to bear their travel and other expenses to participate in the exchange program.

  • What kind of Visa should I apply for?
    - The instructions for the Visa type will be provided by the Host University.
  • Can I do my coursework exchange in my first year of UG and PG?
    - Foreign students (UG) who want to apply for course work exchange are expected to have completed at least 3 to 4 semesters at their home institution.
    - PG students are expected to have completed at least one semester at their home institution.
  • Can I take courses across different departments at Host University?
    - Yes, students can register for courses from different departments at the host University with prior permission from the Faculty advisor of Home University
  • Are there any instructions for students on the exchange program?
    - The students are requested to have a minimum of 85% attendance and abide by the rules and regulations of the university and the law of the Land

General Program

Research scholars are allowed to pursue their research interests at one of the international partner institutions for a period of 6 months to 1 year.

When an MS/PhD scholar spends significant time abroad at a research facility for thesis/ project work/research work, there is a measurable gain to the scholar and the Institutes/Universities involved.

  • Initial arrangements to be made through the Supervisor/Guide at home institution & Counterpart in the foreign institution.
  • Scope of work and deliverables must be established and documented before the research exchange visit begins.
  • He / She must then consult with the Faculty Advisor regarding the suitability of the proposed area of research. The approval of the Faculty Advisor is an essential step of the process.
  • The student must obtain the approval of the Head of the Department.
  • The student must then obtain the necessary clearances from the Academic section and Dean, Academic Research approval before submitting the request to the Office of International Relations.
  • The student can submit his application form and other necessary documents to the Office of International relations (OIR).
  • The OIR will then nominate the applicant to the relevant Office at the foreign university and facilitate the process of admission.
  • The parent institution/host University/faculty/OIR office will then assist as needed with travel funding.
  • Students need to check with the host institution/faculty regarding their stipend to cover the living expenses while on exchange.

    - The instructions for the Visa type will be provided by the Host University.
  • Can a UG student do research work?
    - Yes, UG students can apply for research work if the host University is accepting and the Faculty advisor at the home institute approves.
  • Can I apply for research work without an acceptance letter from the NITC professor?
    - No, you can apply for research work only after an NITC faculty accepts to be your guide
  • Are there any instructions for students on the Research exchange program?
    - The research scholars are requested to report to the Supervisor/Guide at the home institution and update the progress in their research regularly. The Research Scholars/students have to abide by the rules and regulations of the university and the law of Land

International Faculty Programs

Global Initiative of Academic Networks in Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment the country’s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India’s scientific and technological capacity to global excellence.

Duration and Funding: GIAN facilitates the participation of high-quality international academicians for delivering short-term courses and programs in Indian institutions. The GIAN courses will vary in duration from one to three weeks depending on the subject

A lump-sum amount of up to US$ 8000 for 12 to 14 hours of contact and up to US$ 12000 for 20 to 28 hours of contact can be paid to the foreign experts covering their travel and honorarium. Local hospitality will be arranged by the Host Institution. The duration (number of weeks/days) can be mutually decided by the host institution and the visiting faculty

Visa Type: The foreign academicians/experts/faculty visiting India under GIAN should apply for Business VISA for at least one month (preferably 2 months) before the scheduled departure

It is a dedicated program exclusively for overseas scientists and academicians with emphasis on Non-resident Indians (NRI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) / Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) to work as adjunct/visiting faculty for a specific period of time in Indian public funded academic and research institutions. The Scheme recognizes the value of collaborative research as a crucial element for information sharing among researchers for updating and acquiring knowledge and skills, and also to draw different perspectives to solve a shared problem. SERB welcomes accomplished Overseas Scientists to take up challenging research problems in the Indian setting.

Duration and Funding:The Faculty will work for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 3 months a year in an institution in India. It is expected that the Indian Host Institution may engage him/her for a longer duration even after the completion of the assignment. The adjunct position will be offered initially for a period of 1 year and can be renewed every year.
The VAJRA Faculty will be provided with a lump-sum amount of US $ 15000 in the first month of engagement in a year and US $ 10000 pm in the other two months to cover their travel and honorarium. While no separate support is provided for e.g. accommodation, medical/personal insurance etc. the host institute may consider providing additional support. The payment to the faculty will be made in Indian Rupees.

Visa Type: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has advised that if the period of stay is up to 3 months at a time, no registration is required with the FRROs/FROs. However, if the faculty is engaged for a duration exceeding 180 days, then registration may be as per the requirement of the Employment Visa regime.

Duration and Funding: The proposal will be for a period of two years.  The budget can be in any one of the three baskets

  • Up to ₹ 50 lakhs
  • From ₹ 50 lakhs up to ₹ 75 lakhs
  • From ₹ 75 lakhs up to ₹ 100 lakhs

Proposals which have longer time visits of foreign faculty will be given priority for larger sized baskets.

Funding details

  • For a visit of foreign faculty ranging from 1 to 4-month, payment will be made up to US$ 15,000/- for the first month and US$ 10,000/- thereafter including honorarium, travel, stay, etc. Usually, the honorarium of foreign faculty is approx $333 per day.
  • For the visit of a foreign post-doctoral/doctoral scholar, the host Institute will provide suitable free accommodation and an out-of-pocket allowance of ₹ 12,000 per month subject to an upper limit of ₹ 2 lakhs over the duration of the project. The student has to stay for a minimum period of 3 months and register as a visiting foreign student. Tuition fees will be waived by the Indian Institution. Usually, the out-of-pocket allowance for a foreign student is Rs 400 per day.
  • For the visit of an Indian student to the Foreign Institution, payment will be made up to US$ 2000 for travel and $1000 per month for out-of-pocket allowances. Usually, the out-of-pocket allowance for an Indian student is approx. $33 per day.
